Meet crime fiction author, Ian Austin

Ian Austin was born in England but now lives in Auckland, New Zealand.

After an unremarkable school life, he drifted in and out of jobs before finding his salvation in the Hampshire Police, where he began a career as a constable and later a detective. He also spent time as a tactical firearms officer, covert surveillance operative and National Crime Squad trainer. Ian transferred to the New Zealand Police in 2003, having fallen in love with the country and the Kiwi way of life after several visits. He left the police force in 2006 to set up his own training and consultancy business, and now lives rural in the south of Auckland.

He began writing in 2010. The Agency in 2012, The Second Grave in 2015 and Frozen Summer in 2019 make up the introductory trilogy of ex-cop and life damaged Dan Calder. Austin's personal history and truly remarkable Police career provide unmatched ammunition and research material for his writing.

In December 2020, January and February 2021 the trilogy was released in eBook format with bespoke eBook covers. In November 2021 Ian’s fourth Dan Calder novel Bonded was released.

In 2024, Ian launched Man. Made. expanding his literary repertoire and delivering a fresh perspective to his readers. Man. Made. comes with its own soundtrack of hit songs and classical masterpieces.

Ian Austin’s vivid imagination and authentic storytelling continue to captivate audiences worldwide. Keen to always keep moving forward in his literary career, 2025 is going to be a huge year for Ian and his readers. There is a new story but it’s not Dan Calder!

In 2025 Shorte’s Story is due to be published. It’s set in America and involves a number of States Legislatures, the F.B.I. and a South American criminal cartel. For Ian the biggest move away from his previous books is within the very style of writing, which he found to be immensely satisfying.
